More and more people today expect to get what they want instantly (e.g. goods, services, news), without having to wait. Why is this ? Do you think this a positive or negative development?

In recent years, people in many societies attach more importance to instant consumption of either intangible news or tangible products and services. There are various explanations for this dislike of deferred gratification and I believe that this issue is generally negative.

Body paragraph 1
Undeniably, mounting desire for speed is mainly due to leap-frog technological advancements. Emerging generative artificial intelligence has seamlessly integrated into our daily lives, whether be keeping pace with the news updates in a faraway war-torn region or purchasing high-grade Arabica beans from an overseas coffee farm. This cultural shift has reshaped one’s definition of speed, resulting in further push for faster solutions in other aspects of life. Another speculation, however, relates to modern hectic lifestyle. A good example of emphasis on efficiency is rising popularity of drive-thru service and coffee delivery, which caters for rising need to maximize one’s time for a more complex schedule.

Body paragraph 2
The mania for speed deserves more attention than it is likely to get. On the surface, demands for immediate response are justified for those with technological savviness, as precious time should be saved for matters of utmost importance. However, this limbo of constant emergency is a pure manifestation of one’s shortened attention span, ultimately unleashing agitation and anxiety. The inability of concentration also has a negative impact on one’s performance- with problems including inertia on work and study. Another long-term worry pertains to one’s waning faith over the future; the worst scenario is that one may end up grabbing immediate but smaller rewards in life, while skipping the bigger but postponed rewards.
❖ on the surface 表面上看來
