本週我們結合上半年的雅思聽力考試,分享情感表達主題詞彙。

1. suppress/sə'pres/

v.抑制,控制,剋制(感情或反應);忍住

e.g. He had to suppress his anger in front of his boss to maintain professionalism.

e.g. In my culture, men are often taught to suppress their emotions instead of expressing them openly.

e.g. Suppressing emotions for too long can be mentally exhausting and even harmful.

補充:mentally exhausting adj. 心累的;精神疲憊的

professionalism n. 專業度

suppressive adj.壓制的

補充:suppressive education 打壓式的教育

打壓式教育方式與弊端:

1. Some traditional schools adopt a suppressive education style, where students are not encouraged to question authority.

2. Suppressive education tends to focus on rote learning and exam scores.

3. Suppressive education can lead to a lack of creativity and independent thinking in the long run.

補充:question authority 挑戰權威

rote learning 死記硬背

2. externalize /ɪk'stɜːn(ə)laɪz/

v. 表露;公開表達;外化(某種情感/情緒)

e.g. I tend toexternalize my stressby talking to my close friends.

e.g. Some people externalize their anger by yelling or slamming doors, while others just keep it all inside.

反義詞:internalize v. 內化

People who internalize emotions tend to stay quiet or pretend everything is fine, even when they’re upset.

反義詞:bottle up 壓抑,抑制強烈的感情

e.g. I tend to bottle up my feelings when I’m under pressure.

3. reserved /rɪ'zɜːvd/

adj. 矜持的;內斂的;寡言少語的

搭配:emotionally reserved 情感表達剋制的

e.g. Unlike his outgoing sister, he is emotionally reserved and prefers to keep his feelings to himself.

e.g. People from northern cultures are generally more reserved than those from the south.

4. vent /vent/

v. 發泄,宣泄情感

搭配:vent to someone 向某人傾訴

e.g. She telephoned her best friend to vent her frustration.

e.g. I think it is important to have someone you can vent to when life gets overwhelming.

補充:overwhelming 難以承受的

近義表達:let/ blow off some steam 解壓/釋放壓力

e.g. After the exam, we all went out for karaoke to let off some steam.

補充:karaoke 唱K
