外國人說“Hold the beer?”，不是要請你喝啤酒！

Tim到美國出差，同事帶他去酒吧感受一下在地文化。在酒吧點酒時，外國同事對bar tender說：“Can you hold the ice?”

＂Hold the ice？＂Tim覺得太不可思議了，居然叫人拿着冰塊？美國人真是不可思議啊。

其實hold the ice並不是拿着冰塊。

1.“Can you hold the ice?”

（Ｘ）你可以拿着冰塊嗎？

（Ｏ）可以不要放冰塊嗎？

在餐飲或酒吧，你對服務人員說“Can you hold the ice?”，是叫人「不要加冰塊」。這裡的“hold”不是「拿住」或「握住」，而是「排除在外、不要包括」。

例如：

I'd like a ham sandwich, hold the lettuce. 我要一個火腿三明治，不要加生菜。

在英語中， "hold"可以用來表示「不要把…..包括在內」。例如“hold the mayo”在做三明治時不要加美乃滋，“hold the onions”則是指不要加洋蔥。

2.Hold my beer.

（Ｘ）幫我拿着啤酒。/請你喝啤酒。

（Ｏ）看我表演吧！

常常瀏覽社交媒體應該不會太陌生，"Hold my beer"是社羣網站中常用的一個梗，字面意思是「幫我把啤酒拿好」，引申意思爲，「我要大顯身手，開始表演了！」例如，你跟朋友打賭，輸了要去幹一件很蠢的事情時，就會說：“Hold my beer, and watch this”。

這是一種幽默或自嘲的口吻。來看一個例句：

A: "There's no way it's possible to jump from the roof into the pool. It's 20 feet away!"

不可能從屋頂跳進游泳池。有20呎高呢！

B: "Hold my beer, amateur." 你這業餘！看我的。

3.She held the floor for over an hour.

（Ｘ）她hold住全場一小時。／她在地上等了一小時。

（Ｏ）她長篇大論講了一個小時。

中文裡我們常說「hold住全場」，大家可能以爲hold the floor是這個意思，其實它較常用在批評，較爲負面， 指「對一羣人滔滔不絕地講話，不容許別人發表意見」。

Floor在這裡不是「地板」或「樓層」，而是指「發言權」，例如：

He asked the chairman for the floor. 他要求主席允許他發言。

Hold 住全場，掌控整個局面，可以用hold all the cards。

"Hold all the cards" 是指「處於優勢、掌控局面」，就好比在牌局中，握有一手好牌，當然就擁有較高的勝算。在商業交易中，如果一方對交易的成功有絕對的控制權或影響力，你可以說那一方“holds all the cards”。

例句：

We hold all the cards on this deal. 我們擁有這項交易的所有有利條件。

In a situation like this, it’s the big companies that hold all the cards. 在這種形勢下，都是大公司佔優勢。
